AUDIO BASED LEARNING ACTIVITY

LEVEL- intermediate, 7th or 8th grade;
SKILLS- speaking, listening, writing

Introduction:

This activity is connected to the students’ prior knowledge referring to the use of past tenses in short talks about past activities. They have to mind the correct use of auxiliary DID and the short infinitive of the verb, as well as the correct use o the past tense of irregular verbs. Most of the times, for the sake of fluency, people “sprinkle” their speech with fillers, linkers, collocations that contribute to a better fluency.

Task:

A student (voluntarily or not) will have to record himself/herself talking about what he/she did last weekend. Based on his/her speech, the students in the classrooms will have to use affirmative and negative sentences to talk about their assumptions pertaining to their peer’s last weekend activities.
The skills practiced include: writing (questions), listening (to someone’s speaking), speaking (the student making the recording).

Process:
One of the students will leave the classroom and make a recording about the activities that s/he performed last weekend. The student must have a recording device which is compatible with the computer in the classroom. The recording should not exceed 2 minutes. The speaker will use simple past tenses of at least 3 verbs. The speech will also include one of the expressions:
after a while, all of a sudden, on top of that, believe it or not, actually;

The student will be given 10 minutes to prepare and record the speech.
Back in the class, the teacher will elicit from students a set of questions that they would like to ask their colleague. They have to use past tenses as well. The teacher writes the questions on the blackboard.
 Examples:
What did you do?
Where did you go?
Did you go to the movies?
Did you stay home?
Were you alone?
What movie did you watch?
How did you feel after?

The teacher will assign up to 3 questions to groups of 6 students who must figure out possible answers to them.
e.g.
What did you do?
I stayed at home and slept all morning.
I went to the mountain with my family.

The student will come back to the classroom. The teacher has him/her get a look at the questions on the blackboard. Did he/she answer to any of the questions listed there? The teacher will play the student’s record. Was the class wrong/right in their assumptions?
The students will have to orally refer to their assumptions.

e.g. Jane did not stay at home. Actually/ In fact, she went to the hospital.

Conclusion:

Such activities may be of help when teacher wants to drill simple uses of tenses (past, present, future, perfect tenses). All this combined with vocabulary meant to enrich fluency. The “wow” effect element, the novelty, would be the introduction of audio technology in the oral sequences. This involves the student’s contribution to an interactive lesson, will improve the students skills in handling various programs so that they can become better “netizens”.
